5 SKILLS YOU WOULD NEED IN THE NEW DECADE

The next decade will no doubt be another 10 years of mind-blowing innovations, advance in technology, new opportunities and platforms to succeed. It’s important to be prepared for success, here are 5 skills that should help you get started.

According to the World Economic Forum, Complex Problem Solving, Critical Thinking and Creativity are the top soft skills employers will look for in the future. With the increased use of automation and AI in the workplace, a lot of professions would begin to phase out, making jobs even more competitive. This would mean employers won’t just be looking for skill, but creativity and ability to solve problems. This is what would set you apart. Besides the workplace, as an individual, these skills make you original and indispensable wherever you go. Instead of following the norm, you are able to ask questions like “What is another way I can do this”? connect patterns and approach situations from a different angle.

Self-motivation is what would keep you through achieving every goal you set and jumping onboard opportunities. As an individual, you must be able to manage your time and resources, take initiative, plan and execute without anyone looking over your shoulders or micromanaging you. An attribute like this sets you apart from everyone else anywhere you go because you would be able to perform optimally. Also, find someone you can be accountable to. Make sure you are reflecting, measuring your performance and are able to track your growth and development.

Relationships are very important and can determine how far you go in life. You are only as strong or as successful as the people in your circle. This new decade, be deliberate about building, nurturing and sustaining healthy relationships. As amazing as it is to network and meet new people, make sure you are not just using people for what you can get from them. Instead of trying to be acquaintances with 100s of people. Pick a few that you really care about, and share the same values with and let those be a part of your tribe. They would be the ones you can reach out to when you’re feeling discouraged, down and stuck. They would strengthen and encourage you when you fail and can’t seem to move on. True friends are worth more than gold. Find them and make an effort to keep them.

Technology skills are non-negotiable in the next decade as everything becomes even more digitalized. This does not mean you have to know how to code or how to put together a computer. It simply means you have to understand the technology and its application to life, work and various industries. Many jobs and careers are becoming either extinct or morphing, and you need to understand how much your industry would be affected, and how to prepare for it. Understanding technology would allow you to be relevant and able to evolve without being left behind. Even in practical daily living; learning how to use google maps, maximize your phone’s features, learn a new tool or software would make life much easier for you in the next decade.

Effective communication isn’t measured by how loud you are or your language proficiency, but it is measured by how you can effectively pass a message across to an audience. You need to be able to deliver a message to people in a way that they would understand you and take action. Communication is only complete when there is feedback in the form of action or speech. Whether in the workplace or in daily activities, your ability to communicate well will make sure you get your opinions or ideas heard and understood, and as well get the desired response.

With these five skills in your arsenal, you would be sure to seize the decade.
