LinkedIn has been around for some time now and people are still figuring how to cover up the gaps in their resume section. More importantly, standing out on that platform is tricky. It’s like an ex-boss. You never know when you’d need them.

Gladly, the following four-step idiot’s guide should guarantee a successful LinkedIn profile.

A selfie won’t take you far. Neither would a cropped photo from a decade ago do. Put up a professional headshot where you look approachable. Suit up. Ensure your eyes have a glimmer in order to show success and visions for the long term. Surround yourself with Apple gadgets. Still boring? OK, use a good looking model’s photo. No one cares.

Writing a summary in the first person is for normal users. You need to stick with the third person narrative to make it engaging. But don’t start blabbering about your successes straightaway. Put out your failure(you can make them up) and show how they became your ladder of success. Infuse drama, emotions with a rag to riches story but don’t forget mentioning hobbies which you never had time for.

You could be a software developer, a marketer, or a data analyst but putting that straight is too mainstream. You need to puke out every word from the LinkedIn vocabulary. Software Developer? Use Ninja Hacker. Marketer? Growth Hacker. Data Analyst? Just replace it with Data Scientist. Unemployed? Use Entrepreneur, Motivational Speaker, Philanthropist, and other buzz words separated by vertical lines.

Your profile might be set but to make it successful you’d need to put out thought-provoking and humblebragging posts from time to time. Here are some ideas:

Tag your favorite a.k.a famous personalities to show you belong to a coveted club. They might just open LinkedIn for the first time through those mentions.
