East and West

A poem reflects the norms of society

I have seen many a tavern of the East and of the West:
Here the cup-bearer is missing, there the wine is insipid.

Be it Western wisdom or Eastern philosophy,
Both are idol-houses — and it is pointless to circle idols.

Race, nationalism, church, kingdom, civilization, colour —
What choice intoxicants Mastership has created!

Modern learning is the greatest barrier —
Idol-worshipper, idol-seller, idol-maker!

Its feet are tied to the prison of the sensible;
It has never jumped across the sensory limits.

Do not take offense, just give it a try:
The West enlightens the mind but spells ruin to the heart.

Your civilization will use its own dagger to take its life;
The nest built on a delicate branch cannot last.

I broke the spell of modern learning:
I took away the bait and broke the trap.

God knows with what indifference,
Like Abraham, I sat in its fire!
