The Many Categories of Watch People

Humans place things into categories, metaphorical boxes. It is natural. A part of our primal disposition. It helps us process the world around us. This can create a lot of problems for humans because they are not static or singular. We are dynamic, constantly changing, and ever-evolving. What you are one day can easily change the next, yet we power on, trying to classify everything from types of mold to the 650 U.S. government’s official colors.

Our constant need to categorize knows no bounds, including in the watch world. And I am not referring to the myriad of different types of watches, from automatic to manual to quartz, or even categorized by function, GMT, moon phase, chronograph, perpetual calendar, etc. But the need to categorize the person behind the watch. What are the different types of watch people out there?

No other everyday accessory says more about you than a watch. For good or for ill. A watch is a standard accessory, and in the lack of one, that too says a lot about your personality, your values, and your perspective on the world.

However, there are no names for these groups, only descriptions. You will know who I am talking about when I describe them. There could be a few in your life or you may only know them from Instagram, but they are all still real. Sometimes begrudgingly so, you envy some of them. A watch must be viewed the same way art, or a classic car that you will never own must be viewed. They are meant to be appreciated for what they are, not for what you can own. Most of us can never own a Patek 5711, but we can still appreciate Gerald Genta’s design and the impact and influence this watch had on the world, subsequently the history it tells in its complication and design. In the same way, I will never own a Monet but can still be moved by the stunning blend of colors in his lillies and the influence his art had on the impressionist style. So, despite a tinge of envy for the person that owns a 6264 Daytona or the F.P. Journe Centigraphe, I still appreciate the watch as a piece of art, a piece of history. Anyway, I digress.

I will admit if I were a clever man I would have named these watch-wearing bandits of our modern world, but I will leave that up to the readers.

Then you have the others. And of the others, there are even more categories. I refer to the “others” as like the start of the inverse pyramid. The previous categories are considered “non-watch people.” The “others” encompass every level of collector. Every price point. (Also want to note when I say man/guy I am referring to both genders here. Some of the most knowledgeable watch people in this world are women and I support the movement to take away gender-binary watches — I support the women in watches movement — Shoutout to Cara Barrett, Giorgia Mondani, and Bryn Wallner).

These are the watch people, and they are growing fast. A community with folks from all walks of life. They are rich, poor, smart, dumb, interesting, and annoying. Some appreciate the time, some ignore it. Some wear watches because it shows their wealth. Some just for style. Some for history. Some for engineering.

But at the end of the day, no matter what fashion trend is around, how the clothes change, or what technology we have in our pocket. The watch has not and will not go anywhere.
