My name is Sunny Alexander-Johnson, and I’m Henry James, and we’re writers for Dark Sides of the Truth magazine.
Wednesday night at Philly’s, a restaurant in downtown Austin, as usual, consisted of a comfortable setting of a few patrons, pleasant lighting, and excellent service. After being seated, we all shared a few alone time minutes to inspect our menus.
“Mom, have you had the arugula salad here?”
“I have. Henry and I had dinner here last week. I highly recommend it.”
“Wait, Henry ate arugula?”
The question prompted a quick burst of laughter around the table.
“Not funny, y’all.”
“That’s okay, Henry, I still love you despite your unhealthy habits.”
“Thanks, baby.”
After the waitress brought our drink order and then took our meal requests, we all tried to fill the next ten minutes with small talk until our food was served.
“I believe someone needs to clear the air or their conscience or both here. Shaundrika, what’s going on, dear?”
“Nothing, mother. Everything’s fine.”
“Bullshit princess.”
“Henry, please.”
“I’m sorry, hon, but everything is not fine. Sunny, either you tell your mother what’s going on or I will.”
“Tell me what?”
“Tell her, Sunny.”
“Robert, you know?”
“Yes, Cynthia. Sunny and I talked about it on the way over.”
“Will someone please tell me why everyone sitting at this table knows what’s going on except me?”
