Online shopping has been a major trend in recent years, more and more transactions have been implemented efficiently through online platforms. I am personally a frequent online shopper, especially after I moved to New York. I am usually busy and don’t have time to go to physical stores, even when I go to a store during the holidays, products that I like or that is suitable for me are out of stock, which is very inefficient and affects my shopping experience. In this case, online shopping has become my most commonly used shopping method. Online stocking is more sufficient and there are more choices, and I feel more comfortable deciding whether I want to purchase without salespeople looking at me and trying to make me buy things.

However, as a huge fan of online shopping, not surprisingly, I often buy products that are useless for me. Different online retailers and brands have different size charts. Sometimes, even if I carefully measure the size, the products I order may still not be suitable for my body and style. In other cases, in order to sell products on the website, the sellers usually show photos that does not truly reflect the product itself. As a result, when I receive the product, I would find that the original product is not as good as expected. Other than these, I also make purchases just because the website is on sale and everything looks so affordable, or in order to follow the trend. When I receive the actual products, I usually don’t like them as I expected, feel regretful and want to have my money back.

When these things happen, it is time to make returns, which is the most headache time in the whole shopping process for me. Different retailers have different return policies. I used to carry several packages and returned to my local ups, usps and fedex in one day. There was also on time I forgot the return deadline and couldn’t return the goods at last. Therefore, I think it’ll be helpful if there exists a platform that combines the features of both online shopping and in-store shopping. Our Startup Studio is aiming to investigate such an opportunity that customers can go to a physical store to purchase the goods they want during online shopping. In this case, customers can try the goods, feel the actual quality, and decide whether they truly want to good. If the goods are as they expected, they can purchase them and take them home; otherwise, they can leave the products in store without worrying about the returning issues. We also want to develop a personalized recommendation system for each user based on their shopping history to make the customers want to use our platform frequently.
