The Art of Self Introspection and Self Mentoring

During our formative years , we were always mentored and guided by our teachers , parents , elders , friends and we always looked up to them for guidance and constant coaching .

This habit of constant mentoring became a part of our DNA and so we still look out (to others) for it despite having grown up into responsible individuals and being decently placed in our careers. However I have a different take to it , in my opinion “life” is our biggest mentor and the learnings and experiences from it should be the guiding light for us .

And that is where “self introspection” also becomes a key to our own “self mentoring” . Whatever career you are in , it’s very important to regularly self introspect and compare your performance with your prior self . No point comparing your own performance with any one else , the whole intent is to become a better version of your own self and “self introspection” helps in that . Constantly ask yourself the right questions – like did you bring out your best today to work or if there is something distracting you , was there anything you could have done better and how do you go about improving , did you contribute to your team’s success , did you acquire any new skill or learning, was your personal conduct up to mark, etc . Finding answers to these relevant questions in timely manner would lay out the path for your “self mentoring” .

I firmly believe that a person can be most candid with himself /herself only and therefore he/she is the first to know where the shortcomings are and what are the areas of focus . And that would only happen if “self introspection” is done seriously and without any unconscious bias . This honest evaluation of yourself in conjunction with the learnings (and experiences) one has from life would help mentor you into a better individual and also prepare you well for the challenges life throws in future.

And of course , any additional help from people around is always welcome as that speeds up your mentoring path .

So let’s. be honest to ourselves and constantly improve .

Best of luck and take care !!
