Food

Swimsuit weather is approaching. The first day of spring has passed, (for some of us we are wondering will spring ever come?), the days are getting longer. Soon the crocus will pop their heads out of the ground, Easter will be here and then summer. I can hardly wait for the warm sun to shine on my face. Are you ready for summer?

Many Americans feel that it is easier doing their taxes than finding healthy food to eat. The choice of vegetables is corn and potatoes, and the choice of meat is burger. If you want to look good in that swimsuit now is the time to start changing that lifestyle into something a bit better.

It really all comes down to choices. Do you want to eat some fruit and organic yogurt sweetened with stevia or a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit? Let me enlighten you with some facts about the biscuit. Calories for 1 is 560, fat 39 grams, sodium 1,170 mg, and 35 carbs. Not exactly a stellar breakfast. Let’s compare it to fruit and unsweetened organic yogurt. One 6 ounce container of whole milk organic yogurt is 120 calories, fat is 7 grams, sodium is 80 grams, and carbs is 8 grams. Add 1/3 cup of fresh blueberries is only 40 calories, no fat, no sodium and only 11 carbs. Even if you add 1 tsp. Of organic honey, (calories 21, carbs 6 grams, no fat or sodium) you are way ahead of the game and you will stay fuller longer without lethargy setting in.

Eating healthy requires you to think a bit. Ask yourself these questions, first am I really hungry? If you just ate chances are that you may be thirsty. Hunger and thirst take on the same factor in your brain. Drink a large glass of water and adding lemon even makes it better.

If you are hungry by all means eat. Your body need to be fueled with the right food. Do not choose the biscuit with sausage and cheese. You are just asking to gain weight. With 39 grams of fat that is coming from processed sausage, biscuit, egg and cheese (all processed) there is no way that your body can use it as fuel so guess what it gets stored as, that is right fat. And in about 2 hours you will be lethargic and hungry. It ends up being a cycle, you’ll go to the vending machine to get a candy bar and a soda, you are looking for quick energy and you will get it for about 2 hours and the whole cycle will start all over again.

We have been trained well by the media. They make the food look so good but please do not fall for it. Processed foods contain high fructose corn syrup, artificial color, artificial flavor and exciteotoxins. Excitotoxins are added in very large amounts to many processed foods. They make bland food taste really good by exciting our taste buds and over stimulating them. The worst ones are MSG, aspartame, domonic acid, L-BOAA, cysteine and casin. (I’ll explain in another blog what they do stay tuned and stay away.)

When you go grocery shopping stay away from the middle aisles and shop the perimeter of the store. In the produce please look for produce that has not been genetically modified. If the apples are beautiful and all the same size they have been genetically modified. In the meat section look for grass fed organic meats and wild caught fish. Farmed fish swim in their own feces and are fed grain that has been genetically modified. Look for yourself, wild caught salmon is a very deep almost red color, farm raised is pink. The color or polyphenols in the salmon are full of antioxidants. Your body needs antioxidants to fight off disease and free radicals. Choose the red ones.

Eggs should be free range with no antibiotics and the same with cheese, organic coming from grass fed, organic milk. Bread, who doesn’t love bread? Processed bread is terrible for you. When it is processed they remove all of the good stuff and vitamin enrich it with more processed stuff. Choose whole grain bread that says, “No GMO’s. Sprouted bread like Ezekiel is an excellent choice. When you make a sandwich only use 1 slice of bread and fill it full of veggies, cucumber, tomato, peppers, lettuce, avocado, and fresh turkey. Don’t purchase processed meats. Did you ever read the ingredients?

You can drop weight so quickly if you just set some rules for yourself and stick with them. I promise the weight will fall off of you! But you are the one who has the chance and the choice. You can do this, I believe in you.
