E.D.S.O Leadership Ecuation

There are many books that promise that they will guide you to understand business, be a persuasive person, understand people’s behavior, how to create a successful organization or how to lead a team. Well, now a days you can find information about anything and all the steps through how to achieve anything. Even though this is a reality, there are no steps to become a “Successful Leader” or the “Successful Business Man” the competitive world has told us to become in order to leave our mark in the new human innovation. I’m not saying that it is impossible for you to become a leader or being successful, but the crude reality is that you won’t find this answer in any book, you can only find it in two places, in your chemistry and in human experience. In the book “ Leaders Eat Last” the author, Simon Sinek, mentions how leaders are actually born and not made just by a simple investigation on the human rate of segregation of four mai chemicals: Endorphin, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Oxytocin. Based on his declaration of the influence of this four chemicals in our body I decided to synthesize this as the E.D.S.O Leadership Ecuation.

As you could guess, E.D.S.O stands for Endorphin, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Oxytocin. First there are the selfish chemicals, Endorphin and Dopamine, the ones that are produced mostly as a rewards for our own success. Endorphin is basically a chemical that helps us reduce pain, as well to endure longer. Dopamine on the other side is chemical that basically tells the brain it has made a good job or gives humans pleasure after completing any task. As a leader this chemicals are esencial for our formation, but not for execution, that is why they are called the selfish chemicals in our system, they are the ones that helps us strive in our ambition and the endurance to accomplish our goals as well to recognize our progress and finally making ourselves stronger and well formed leaders.

So if there are selfish chemicals, there should be selfless chemicals too? Yes, even we believe that business men only think about themselves, actually many researches declared that people with leadership assets segregate more of the selfless chemicals because naturally they feel good about making a mayor good and changing something for the better. This selfless chemicals are Serotonin and Oxytocin, this are realized not only for personal pleasure or recognition, they are mostly released when we do actions at a higher level of our own success. We all have felt it, it’s the good sensation when you help a stranger, you rescue a dog, when we do community service, when we do something for someone we care for, all of our altruist actions are being awarded by this two chemicals.

So, let’s leave the chemistry aside and start talking about business. Great leaders through time in the industrial and business world have been recognized for their ambition and innovation, and maybe they have not made so many altruist work, but they have surely started out by gathering people, sharing their ideas, having a vision of the future and most importantly a mind set that is looking to improve an aspect of our society. Now, the thing about a good leader is a simple idea that Simon Sinek reviews in his book, leaders are the one who put themselves for others and in a way they allow others to grow and develop. Leaders not only dictate, they indicate and lead the way.
