When Your Mother Dies

A poem about grief

The days melt quickly
one by one, into each other,
but everywhere your eyes can see,
are others with their mothers.

Your pain is unbearable,
how you’ll make it,
and if you see another mom,
you’re certain you can’t take it.

It doesn’t matter when she left,
the pain you feel is real,
and no one seems to understand,
how awful pain can feel.

So then you take your feelings,
and wrap them up so tight,
you stuff them down inside of you,
or try, with all your might.

For you have just decided,
you’ll live, but not the same,
for every part of you still longs,
to hear her call your name.
